Reign Recapped: 3.09 Wedlock

Written by:  Drew Lindo and Wendy Riss Directed by: Norma Bailey

Mary knows her power and ability to reign as Queen is limited. The men who surround her take part in a long standing and ever changing power play. The situation with Don Carlos suits her needs very well. He would provide her with the husband she seeks and unite Scotland with the strength of Spain without the fear that her new husband would misuse her lands and wealth for their own gain. Despite her best intentions Mary’s conscience weighs heavy on her. To marry Don Carlos after his accident knowing he is not fully himself and encouraging him to sanction support for Scotland may be what it takes to save Scotland but it may destroy Mary.

And yet as this episode proved all is not as it seems. Don Carlos regains his memory after witnessing a whipping game and hides his recovery, instead he begins to secretly plan revenge on Mary for the part she played in his accident. Don Carlos wishes to have control of and to crush Scotland. To aid in this plan he seeks Crown Matrimonial as a clause in their wedding contract. In plain English this means that if Mary dies without bearing an heir Don Carlos would rule Scotland as King alone. Signing such an agreement is dangerous however with Elizabeth also seeking a husband thestakew are high. Still believing Don Carlos to be lame, Mary agrees to the amendment on the condition that they get married the very next day. Only after agreeing to marry Don Carlos does Mary witness him move his ‘paralysed’ hand. Sensing all is not well Mary turns to Gideon for aid.

The walls have ears and the news Gideon relays back to Mary is far from good. Don Carlos has hired mercenaries who just coincidentally happen to specialise in assassination. Gideon and Mary both understand this is an indication that Don Carlos plans to have Mary killed shortly after the marriage. Now Mary must catch her husband to be in his lie to avoid certain death.

On the day of the marriage the Crown Matrimonial is mysteriously missing from the marriage contract. Enraged Don Carlos’s mask slips and he mistakenly proves his has control of his ‘paralysed’ limb. Once wind gets out that Don Carlos planned to trick Mary into marriage and then have her murdered it is fair to see the union of Scotland and Spain is off.

Claude and Leith are enjoying ‘Latin’ together. Behind a smoke screen of lessons the couple are enjoying each others company. Leith is teaching the young princess self defence and overall they are just enjoying being young and generally care give. Not long after finally enjoying each other in the adult department Claude receives from devastating news. Despite assurances from her brother, the King that he would allow her to chose her own husband Narcisse has set out to set up a marriage for Claude and earn himself some gold.

Meanwhile in England Elizabeth is learning the hard way that elicit dungeon meetings have consequences. The Virgin Queen is hurting her reputation. Virgins really shouldn’t be having babies and a baby the Queen is having. Whilst Dudley plots abortions, a notion Elizabeth rejects on the grounds that it is dangerous and would likely kill her.

Instead Elizabeth seeks to marry Robert but what do you do about that pesky issue of him being married. Killing her would look rather suspicious so option ones off the table. Waiting for Amy to die would take far too long so the only less than ideal option left is divorce.

Amy’s reaction to the news is as calm as a house on fire. Realising the reason behind the marriage Amy goes off edge and threatens to reveal the secret to all in England who would hear her. In response Robert threatens to have Amy kept prisoner in her own home and ultimately the insane asylum.

Locked up and still as angry as before Amy plots her final act of revenge on her husband and the Queen. Staging a struggle Amy then channels her best Rachface and throws herself down the stairs. In her death Amy understands the controversial nature of her death will forever keep Robert and Elizabeth apart.

So what becomes of a virgin Queen with no husband and a baby on the way?
