Reign Recapped: 4.10 A Better Man

Written by: John J. Sakmar and Kerry Lenhart

Directed by: Dawn Wilkinson

Barely wed Mary is already scheming and strategizing ways to secure the English throne.

Mary seeks the support of an influential family the Hamilton’s, a family with a long blood feud with Darnley’s family. She does so without the knowledge of her husband, Mary will do what is required.

Darnley is angry but Mary begs him to be the better man, rise above the provocation and finally end the blood feud for the good of Scotland.

James and Greer finally share a kiss. Both deserve happiness.

Later Emily gives James information that the Hamilton family plan to kill Mary before the coronation. In return she tells James she wishes to start a new life in France.

At court Darnley is trying to be friendly with the Hamilton despite many provocations. Both men hate each other and barely hide it.

When James arrives back at court he immediately has Mary sent to safety but the Hamilton family are missing. When they refuse to disarm they are all killed, not before they reveal that John Knox informed them that they would be killed regardless.

Emily lied to James and both sides had been set up by Knox.

Now with a powerful protestant family dead Mary faces real danger.

James instead takes the blame, sparing Mary from losing all her protestant supporters. He is be banished from Scotland, before he leaves he guides Mary to replace him with Lord Bothwell.

Mary dismissed Emily home, it may have been kinder to keep her locked up.

Darnley is coronated in a small affair bit before he does he learns he is to be a father.

At English court Elizabeth seems much more relaxed and happier, maybe all those tears were just sexual frustration?

Taking time off from being Queen and planning state affairs she takes to the bathhouse to relax. Historically many people in the Tudor period only bathed once or twice a year as they believed it could cause illness.

Elizabeth on the other hand very much enjoyed baths, in Reign Elizabeth apparently enjoys baths with Gideon Blackburn.

Side note Elizabeth has a named lady in waiting, say hello to Jane everyone (Megan Hutchings).

When Gideon brings up her upcoming birthday, Elizabeth suggests Gideon, her bed and cake. Now let’s be honest that is an episode of Reign we would all watch.

Confession here I had to go back and rewatch this episode as my original notes got a little side tracked by the thought of Elizabeth and cake. Opps.

Gideon suggests arranging a not so little get together at court to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, a chance to woo Catholics.

And find a suitable husband, one that Elizabeth can tolerate and one that is keen to not have her head chopped off. The memories of her mother’s tragic death are never far.

The birthday celebration attracts multiple suitors with Gideon playing matchmaker. When Elizabeth takes a suitor for a walk in the garden Gideon isn’t so pleased.

Later Gideon turns down a night in the Queen’s bed as he is developing feelings for her. Oh Gideon.

Gideon tries to get Elizabeth to focus on suitors but instead Elizabeth confesses she has feelings for Gideon.

Whilst they both know Elizabeth must marry they hope their love will last regardless.

In Gideon’s own words, he is not Dudley.

Catherine returns to France where Nicole has been continuing to  have Charles ear.

Henri is heading towards court and Catherine is desperate to have Nicole persuade Charles to willingly abdicate to avoid bloodshed between the two brothers.

Things take a turn for the worse when Nicole reveals she had fallen for Narcisse and does not wish to go to a secluded chateau with Charles.

Nicole is angry and Catherine suggests Narcisse do what he is best at, wooing women into bed. Protestants have taken a church full of people hostage and will kill them unless Charles releases protestant prisoners.

With Nicole on board, Charles agrees to take a strong position on the protestant protests. His people finally see him as a hero and strong King.

Henri arrives at court and to Catherine’s relief and surprise he is happy to just be a Prince, free of the burden of Kingship.

Mary and Darnley are newlyweds with a child on the way, with schemes to claim England too one wonders how long the peace can last?

In England, Elizabeth seeks a husband, her cake one may say, whilst eating it too. With Gideon on board it finally seems like Elizabeth can actually smile. How long will that last?  Elizabeth is all too aware of the threat Mary and Darnley pose her.

In France, Charles had finally found his feet but how long can be be King?  Henri may be happy for now but before long he may seek the power himself
